MDEQ reopens Bayou Casotte after spill kills fish

PASCAGOULA — The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has reopened Bayou Casotte and nearby waters in the Mississippi Sound to fishing and to swimming and other water contact.

The department says it closed the bayou and the sound within 1,000 feet of the bayou’s mouth on Aug. 19, after a fish kill linked to low-pH water released by Mississippi Phosphates Corp. MDEQ reopened the waters on Friday.

Spokesman Robbie Wilbur says in a news release that Mississippi Phosphates notified the agency about the discharge, saying it was caused by heavy rain.

The agency says it is reviewing whether the company broke any laws.
