New CVB targets trash, blighted property to boost tourism

MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST — Members of the new Mississippi Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau are developing a vision and plan to increase tourism, starting in part by cleaning up South Mississippi.

John McFarland, Tourism Partnership chairman, says a report presented by members of the Gulf Coast Regional Tourism Partnership showed the No. 1 negative perception of tourists is the Coast’s appearance — litter and overgrown lots.

Chet Harrison, a board member, says as a tourist he would not get off the highway at a bad-looking exit where grass and trees are growing out of the concrete median.

The Sun Herald reports the new board started work in July and has a deadline of Sept. 30 to present its vision to the Harrison County supervisors. A month later, the bureau must submit its goals.
