JACKSON, Mississippi — The former mayor, ex fire chief and two other former employees of tiny Bassfield – population 254 – landed in jail Friday on embezzlement charges.
State Auditor Stacey Pickering said the arrests resulted from an investigation into the conversion of surplus property into personal use. Taken into custody after indictments charging embezzlement and conspiracy to commit embezzlement were Jerry C. Holland, former mayor; Tommy Dewitt, former fire chief; Robert Mauldin, former maintenance supervisor; and Dianna Hutchison, former deputy clerk and part-time police officer.
The four former employees of the Jefferson Davis County town were booked on bonds of $15,000.
