GREENVILLE — The city of Greenville has hired an environmental consultant who will assess potential redevelopment sites for soil contamination.
The Delta Democrat Times reports that the city has hired Marietta, Ga.-based EarthCon Consultants Inc.
Greenville Mayor John Cox, in May, accepted two Brownfields Assessment Grants totaling $400,000 for the city.
“Brownfield” refers to property that has been contaminated by a substance and may require significant cleaning to put it back into commerce.
City engineer Lozenzo Anderson says the city will compile a list and prioritize areas within the city limits to be assessed.
He says the properties do not have to be city-owned.
Officials say the assessments potentially will provide sites for industries looking to expand into the Delta.
