Contract awarded to demolish flood-damaged homes on lake

GREENVILLE — The Washington County Board of Supervisors has awarded a contract for $33,455 to demolish five Lake Ferguson houses acquired this summer.

The Delta Democrat Times reports that the work is being funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The supervisors began last year acquiring the five houses, which were among more than a dozen damaged by the May 2011 flood along the Mississippi River. About 15 homeowners expressed interest in having the county buy them out, and five requests were approved.

As part of the acquisition, emergency officials assessed the properties’ values, and FEMA offered the homeowners 75 percent of the fair market value.

Emergency Management Director David Burford says once the demolition is done, the land will be returned to green space and belong to the county.
