Damage from fire shuts down cotton seed oil mill

GREENWOOD — A fire at Delta Oil Mill on Friday night has shut the facility down until repairs can be made.

“Nobody was injured. That’s the main thing,” John Stewart, the mill’s manager, told the Greenwood Commonwealth.

The fire broke out around 9 p.m. in the sprawling plant’s baling room, Stewart said.

Stewart said the plant was processing cotton seed before the fire broke out.

Stewart said there was no structural damage to the plant from the fire. There also was no damage to the cotton seed stored at the plant.

Fire department investigators said the fire broke out when a hydraulic fluid pump box exploded after a cooling fan apparently malfunctioned.

Firefighters used foam and approximately 5,000 gallons of water to put out the blaze.

Greenwood Fire Chief Marcus Banks said crews were on the scene a couple of hours.

“It wasn’t a large-scale fire,” Banks said.

Banks said typically the department sees an increase in fire runs to the oil mill during the fall and winter months as more seed is processed.

Stewart didn’t know when the plant would resume operations.
