Ex-teller gets eight years for stealing $200K-plus

WIGGINS — A former lead bank teller has been ordered to prison for eight years and must pay restitution of $201,000 for embezzling from the Bank of Wiggins.

The Sun Herald reports Circuit Judge Larry Bourgeois sentenced 38-yeaer-old Veronica Morse yesterday to 20 years and suspended 12, leaving eight to serve followed by five years of probation.

Prosecutors say Morse apologized and told the court she had a shopping addiction and used the money to provide for her family and take trips.

Morse was arrested in December after the bank filed a complaint with the Stone County Sheriff’s Office. Bank officials suspected she was creating fake cash transaction tickets and entering them in the bank’s computer to hide discrepancies.

She pleaded guilty Monday on two counts of embezzling.
