Troubled interstate project remains on schedule

MADISON COUNTY — A multimillion-dollar project to widen lanes between two Madison County interchanges on I-55 is on schedule despite having to hire a new contractor.

The Clarion-Ledger reports W.G. Yates and Son Construction Co. is working about 12 hours a day, seven days a week to reach the target completion date of November 2014.

Mississippi Department of Transportation spokesman Michael Flood says the $85.5 million project began in May 2012.

MDOT and the Federal Highway Administration approved Yates Construction as the new contractor for the project after Central District Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall announced last month that Hill Brothers Construction is no longer working on the project.
