MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST — The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources reports that more than 1,260 volunteers took part in a cleanup effort on Mississippi’s beaches and waterways.
Saturday’s cleanup took place at 49 designated sites during the 25th annual Mississippi Coastal Cleanup.
In a news release, the department said Sunday that the 1,266 volunteers picked up 934 bags of trash. That included 119 bags of recyclables and 75 tires along nearly 95 miles of Coastal waterways in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties.
The total weight came to about 7.5 tons of marine litter.
