Investigators continue to probe debris found in bay

BiloxiBayBridgeFullyOpenedlgBILOXI — The state Department of Marine Resources plans to further investigate the debris field just north of the Biloxi Bay Bridge on the Biloxi side of the bay that is a threat to boaters.

They investigated last week and found large pieces of concrete with rebar embedded in it. But workers were unable to clearly determine what and how much they were dealing with under the water.

The Sun Herald reports the winds were brisk Monday and the sonar equipment the DMR uses to detect underwater objects was unable to get sharp images of the debris field.

Melissa Scallan, DMR spokeswoman, says they suspect the concrete and rebar may have been left from the 2006 demolition of the old Biloxi Bay Bridge, which Hurricane Katrina destroyed.
