MDMR uses sonar to identify debris in bay

BILOXI — The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources has identified a large piece of concrete near the Biloxi-Ocean Springs bridge after using a sidescan sonar in the area Wednesday.

Staff in the Marine Fisheries and Marine Patrol departments found a piece of concrete about 15 feet long that is two feet below the water’s surface, as well as some rebar. All of the obstructions were located on the west side of the bridge and south of the channel in an isolated area.

It appears that the debris is from the old Biloxi-Ocean Springs bridge that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

“Our staff will continue to coordinate with the Mississippi Department of Transportation to determine what action needs to be taken,” said Melissa Scallan, public information officer for the MDMR.
