State Sen. Terry Brown being treated for cancer

COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — State Sen. Terry Brown of Columbus says he’s undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer in his left lung.

Brown tells WCBI-TV (http://bit.ly/17gtc75 ) on Wednesday that the cancer is in its early stages and doctors have not talked to him about surgery. The diagnosis came last week, and Brown says he expects to have four to five months of chemotherapy.

The 63-year-old lawmaker has smoked for years.

Brown is president pro tempore of the Mississippi Senate, meaning he serves as presiding officer of the 52-member chamber when the lieutenant governor is away

Brown served in the state House from 1988 to 2000. He ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 1999 and has served in the Senate since January 2004. His district is entirely in Lowndes County.

COLUMBUS — Mississippi’s lieutenant governor says Republican state Sen. Terry Brown of Columbus is undergoing an “aggressive treatment plan” after being diagnosed with an illness in the past few days.

Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves’ statement today did not disclose the diagnosis for 63-year-old Brown.

Brown is president pro tempore, meaning he serves as presiding officer of the 52-member state Senate when the lieutenant governor is away.

Brown served in the Mississippi House from 1988 to 2000. He ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 1999 and has served in the Senate since January 2004. His district is entirely in Lowndes County.
