Stephen Hemelt has been named editor of The Natchez Democrat, natchezdemocrat.com and affiliate publications. Previously, Hemelt was managing editor of The Daily Herald in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. A native of New Orleans, the 32-year-old Hemelt, and his wife, Candace, have two children.
A graduate of Louisiana Tech University, Hemelt previously served as associate managing editor of The Daily Iberian in New Iberia, La., for three years before to working three years in North Carolina.
Hemelt also served as managing editor of The Jackson Independent newspaper in Jonesboro, La., from 2004 to 2007.
Hemelt succeeds Julie Cooper, who stepped down in February to be home with her infant daughter.
