Tropical Storm Karen has FEMA workers un-furloughed

Even a federal shutdown has to yield to a potential hurricane.

Some workers who were furloughed due to the federal government shutdown are being called back to work as Tropical Storm Karen churns in the Gulf of Mexico.

White House spokesman Jay Carney says President Barack Obama is being updated about the storm. He says Obama directed his team to ensure staffing and resources are available to respond to the storm.

The first named Gulf storm to threaten the U.S. this year, Tropical Storm Karen has a hurricane watch extending from Grand Isle, La., to the Florida Panhandle.
