Water Valley man breaks record for largest watermelon

Watermelon-2-500x293It might be a little late in the year to be eating watermelon, but it obviously is a great time for growing them.

According to a report from WCBI-TV, Jerry Vaughn of Water Valley now holds the state record for growing the largest watermelon. The monster melon weighed a record 239.5 pounds. It’s 38 inches long with a girth of 5 feet, 3 inches.

Vaughn officially weighed the melon last Friday on state certified scales. And that called for a road trip.

Last Saturday, Vaughn and his family headed to Missouri to enter the melon in the Great Pumpkin Common-Wealth. He won top prize in the watermelon category and $600.

He credits the unusual summer weather, hot September days and the seed-line for the weight of the melon.

Sounds like Vaughn and his family will be spitting seeds for a while.
