Aldermen mulling ordinance change to allow for pedicabs

OXFORD — The Oxford Board of Aldermen will consider changing the city’s taxi law to allow for at least two new pedicab companies to provide service around downtown Oxford.

The proposed change to the ordinance had a first reading at Tuesday’s board meeting. If approved, the law would allow pedicabs to operate in Oxford on streets where the speed limit is less than 40 miles per hour. The pedicab operators would have to follow the same traffic laws as bicycles and all other vehicles on the road.

A pedicab, also known as a cycle rickshaw, transports passengers in a carriage-styled seat that is hooked up to a bicycle.

Attorneys from two pedicab companies, Rebel Pedal and Rebel Rickshaw, thanked the aldermen and city officials for considering the ordinance change.

“We will provide a safe, green and new alternative in transportation,” said attorney Hiram Eastland, representing Rebel Rickshaw. “My clients will be operating 12 months a year, not just game days.”

Some of the pedicabs can seat up to five people at a time.

Drivers will have to pass background checks like taxi drivers, but they will only be required to have a Class R license which is just a regular driving license.

Pedicab companies would be required to apply for a permit and carry a commercial general liability insurance policy in the amount of at least $1 million per occurrence and a $2 million annual aggregate, which is much more coverage than vehicle taxis are required to carry. Taxis are required to have insurance of $100,000 for the death or injury to any one person, $300,000 total public liability for any one accident and $100,000 property damage.

  1. RE: Oxford Pedi-cabs

We moved from Jackson to Pensacola several years back and we have an amazing growth going in downtown with Palafox Street ( one of America’s Top 10 Streets, just named ) — lots of new restaurants, music venues and galleries plus the best AAA stadium in U.S. on the downtown bayfront.
Pedi-cabs and Sigways have been added. The pedi-cabs are terrific they really add a feeling of ambience to downtown and are helpful to tourists and us locals needing to get from events to restaurants and vice versa.

Great idea for Oxford and would be perfect for Ocean Springs.
