MDOT: Drawbridge project progressing, getting new technology

BILOXI — As part of the $8.2-million Interstate 110 Drawbridge Rehabilitation Project, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will soon begin work to replace all of the original mechanical and electrical systems that have been in place since 1976.

MDOT Southern Transportation Commissioner Tom King says the new technology will improve the long-term performance of the bridge.

Due to the installation of the updated system, all large marine vessels requiring a drawbridge opening will need to give a 24-hour notice to MDOT by calling 1-855-832-9408.  This is a change from the policy in place during hurricane season, allowing for large boats to navigate the channel on an “on demand” basis.

The project is scheduled for completion in until June 2014.
