JACKSON — The U.S. Attorney’s Office wants a federal judge to deny State Auditor Stacey Pickering’s request to authorize the release of Mississippi Department of Marine Resources records being sought by a Gulf Coast newspaper.
Pickering asked on Dec. 5 for the records to be released in response to an order by Harrison County Chancery Judge Jennifer Schloegel, who said they should he made available for copying.
Gulf Publishing and the Sun Herald asked Schloegel to force Pickering to hand over the records. MDMR has been the target of ongoing state and federal investigations over its use of public money.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jerry Rushing in Jackson wrote in a court filing Wednesday that the records are part of an ongoing federal grand jury investigation and should not be released for publication.
