Corn farmers set new production record

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — Corn remained Mississippi’s No. 4 crop in 2013, despite a drop in the overall harvest fall as commodity prices fell.

The crop was valued at an estimated $631 million in 2013 and set a new Mississippi production record with an average yield of around 180 bushels per acre. Erick Larson, a Mississippi State University extension grain crops agronomist, says it reflected a terrific growing season.

Extension Service agricultural economist John Michael Riley tells WTVA that corn prices dropped from $6.89 to $4.40 per bushel on the nation’s abundant harvest.

Economists say the national corn crop set a production record in 2013, and next year’s numbers are expected to be almost as high.
