Delta city to cover workers' insurance rate increase

LELAND — The city of Leland will cover increases in health insurance for its employees.

The Delta Democrat Times reports that the city this week renewed its group health care plan with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi.

The city’s insurance consultant, Willie Lawton, told the board of aldermen new benefits under the Affordable Care Act and a 5 percent increase in taxes and fees meant Blue Cross raised premiums 10 percent.

He said the current annual premium for an employee and spouse is $658 and will increase to $724 next year.

Mayor Kenny Thomas says the city will take more money from the budget’s group health insurance funds to offset the increase. The city has 68 employees on its health plan.
