Hood files lawsuit against Chase for collection activities

JACKSON — Attorney General Jim Hood has filed a lawsuit in Hinds County saying JPMorgan Chase should pay up to $10,000 per violation for fraudulently trying to collect debts from Mississippians who did not owe the company money.

Hood said in a written statement that a state investigation found that Chase pursued Mississippi consumers for debt that they had paid or settled, that they did not owe, or that they had discharged in bankruptcy.

The Clarion-Ledger reports that the lawsuit follows an 18-month investigation by Hood’s office.

Chase has not commented on the complaint.
