HATTIESBURG — It may be too late for the 2014 wish list, but Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree said he is interested in revisiting the addition of a 1 percent sales tax that could provide the city as much as $10 million annually.
That initiative, dubbed “Progress Hattiesburg,” failed to win the necessary approval from the state Legislature during its 2007 session and never was brought to Hattiesburg citizens to consider.
But DuPree tells The Hattiesburg American he wants to explore the possibility again that would provide the city a dedicated revenue stream without having to raise ad valorem taxes.
The sales tax would be applied to selected retail items. Numerous categories would be excluded from the hike.
