Cancer Registry awards gold certification to CMMC

JACKSON — Central Mississippi Medical Center (CMMC) has received gold certification from the Mississippi Cancer Registry (MCR).

The MCR began a certification process in 2008 for hospitals modeled after the central cancer registry certification conducted by the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). The purpose of the certification process is to recognize those hospitals who have submitted timely, complete and high quality data to the MCR.

There are two possible levels in which a facility can achieve — gold or silver. To receive a gold certification for the 2011 data, facilities must have submitted at least 95 percent of the expected volume of cancer cases diagnosed and/or receiving first course of treatment at the hospital. According to the Certification Summary Report, CMMC submitted 96 percent of the expected cancer case volume.

Additionally, less than two percent of cancer cases could have been missing one of the following: age, gender or the city where the patient resided at the time of diagnosis. Less than three percent of the cancer cases could have been missing race. CMMC did not have any cases missing age at diagnosis, gender or city at diagnosis and less than one percent of the cases submitted were missing the race.

Lastly, the facility must have submitted information on 100 percent of the unresolved cancer deaths that occurred at the facility. CMMC reviewed and submitted information on 100 percent of the death requests prior to the deadline.
