Ex-court clerk pleads guilty to embezzlement

handcuffsPRENTISS — State Auditor Stacey Pickering reports Gail Williams, former Municipal Court clerk for the Town of Prentiss, has pled guilty to embezzling $89,620.27.

Williams, 59, was sentenced to five years with two years to be served under house arrest and three years suspended. She was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $79,620.27, which is $10,000 less than owed. OSA previously issued and collected on a demand for $10,000 from her bonding company.

In her position, Williams accepted cash payments for court fines and did not record the payments on the monthly reports submitted to the town clerk, according to Pickering.

Williams was employed by the town for 26 years prior to her resignation.
