GCRL seminars aim at filling coolers with more fish

As spring approaches, anglers are gearing up to catch some fish. And a series of events offered through the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) aims at insuring a better haul in 2014.

Marine scientists from GCRL and local professional fishing guides and experts are teaming up to offer a series of four evening seminars. Participants will learn about the habits and movements of local game fish and discover how to recognize where fish are lurking and why they’re there. Marine scientists will share scientific facts about what fish eat and when they eat, and explain how time of day, tide state, water temperature and salinity and moon phase affect the movements and appetites of popular game fish.

The seminars will be held at GCRL in Caylor Auditorium at 703 East Beach Drive in Ocean Springs. They will be held from 6-8 p.m. on four Thursday evenings, March-June. The fee is $25 per session.

Monies raised from seminars fund research and education programs at CGRL’s Center for Fisheries Research & Development and Marine Education Center.
