Gentiva Health Services Inc., whose website lists 24 locations in Mississippi, including two in Fl,owood, says it is closing 46 of its home health-care locations across the country.
Hundreds of clinicians and other health care professionals are expected to lose their jobs, the Atlanta-based company said in a report published Thursday by the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
Based on revenue, Gentiva (NASDAQ: GTIV) is currently the largest provider of home health and hospice services in the United States. The company has about 430 branch offices in 40 states and 14,600 employees.
The downsizing comes as Gentiva struggles with poor financial health. Through the first nine months of 2013, the company lost $197 million.
The company has previously closed a significant number of branch operations and sold a number of operating units. During the fourth quarter of 2012, the company sold its Phoenix area hospice operations. During the second half of 2011 and continuing into early 2012, the company undertook a comprehensive review of its branch structure, support infrastructure and other significant expenditures to reduce its ongoing operating costs because of what it said was a “challenging rate environment facing the company,” the Business Chronicle reported.
As a result, it closed or divested 46 home health branches and 13 hospice branches and completed significant reductions in staffing levels in regional, area and corporate support functions.
The company specializes in skilled nursing, social work, nutrition and disease management education. Other services include physical, occupational, speech and neuro-rehabilitation.
The Gentiva family of companies includes Gentiva Home Health, Gentiva Hospice, Emerald Coast Hospice, Hospice of Charleston, Odyssey Hospice and VistaCare Hospice.
