Hub City wants lawmakers to extend lodging tax

HATTIESBURG — Travelers stopping for the night in the city of Hattiesburg could continue to pay a 2 percent lodging fee until June 2018 if legislators act on city officials’ request.

The Hattiesburg American reports the city council unanimously adopted a resolution, requesting that the Legislature amend the legislation that created the Hattiesburg Tourism Commission and extend the special tax.

Without an extension, the body endorsing the city’s assets would lose one of its prime revenue streams at the end of June.

Mayor Johnny DuPree said attracting people to the city is an economic necessity.
