Report: State's women-owned business growth ranks fifth in U.S.

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — Mississippi has an estimated 69,500 women-owned firms, employing 57,700 workers and attributing to roughly $9,564,700, according to the fourth-annual American Express OPEN State of Women-Owned Businesses Report.

Mississippi is ranked fifth in growth of number of firms over the past 17 years.

Nationally, the number of women-owned businesses has increased 68 percent since 1997.

The report analyzes the 1997, 2002, and 2007 data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s business census, the Survey of Business Owners.
