BATESVILLE — A federal appeals court has reinstated the convictions of two men involved in a case of bribery and kickbacks involving a north Mississippi hospital.
A three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans ruled yesterday in cases against Ray Shoemaker and Lee Garner.
The government alleges Shoemaker, a former administrator at Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville, and Garner, owner of Guardian Angel Nursing/On-Call Staffing, conspired to increase boost Garner’s nurse staffing business and Garner paid Shoemaker for his help.
Shoemaker was convicted on six counts. A Mississippi judge ordered a new trial on other two counts.
The 5th Circuit panel upheld Shoemaker’s conviction on the six counts. It reinstated his convictions on the other two counts.
The panel reinstated convictions on four counts against Garner.
