The owners of M2C Energy Solutions, a full-service energy saving products company, is getting ready for its national rollout at the end of the month. Based in Gulfport, the company researches, educates and recommends products, systems and services for residential and commercial customers who want to save money on energy.
Terry Mobbs, who created the company and is its director of marketing, said M2C’s goal is ‘net zero’ energy costs for every client. “That means first reducing the energy demand and then supplying products and systems that will help get them to net zero,” Mobbs said. “Our multi-state dealer network, suppliers and partners alike are focused on reducing energy costs and increasing operating efficiencies of our clients.”
Mobbs, a general contractor and developer with a background in the Mississippi casino industry, was steered toward renewable energy after Katrina when he decided to assemble self-sustaining trailers for his work crews. His search for solar panels and water purification systems led him to other products such as hurricane resistant concrete building materials. “So something good came out of Katrina,” he said.
Along with partner Charles Reddien, another casino industry veteran, he said he found that Europe was producing more energy efficient and wind resistant materials than the U.S. He also saw insurance rates in Florida drop when concrete building products were used in homes and businesses. Mobbs’ focus began shifting from hurricane resistant buildings to energy efficient ones.
M2C’s products include autoclaved aerated concrete, a lightweight material for walls, floors and roofs. AAC building blocks are manufactured using quartz sand, lime and other natural materials. Other products offered by the company include LED lighting, solar hot water systems, high performance roof coating, Photovoltaic Products and water purification systems.
As his new venture got under way, Mobbs soon ran into a problem resulting from using the advanced products: building inspectors unfamiliar with them weren’t sure how to deal with them. “Every time I went to another area,” he said, “they didn’t know how to inspect them.”
There were other hurdles, he said. “No one knew how to insure the buildings or finance them,” he said. Gradually Mobbs pieced together relationships with local utilities and building inspectors to gather information and work out the kinks. “Now I have nationwide financing and insurance,” he said. “I had to become associated with a lot of people.”
Mobbs said the last hurdle, setting up certification training courses, has been under way for the last six months. “It’s for builders, salespeople, dealers and state distributors, anyone who wants to come. Then they can go and sell,” he said.
The certification is needed, he said, “because the products are so new and how they interact, we needed to set up training.” And without the certification, “they can’t order the products,” he said. M2C is also setting up a nationwide sales force to sell the products for the manufacturers. “They don’t order from the plant, they order from us,” he said.
So far a dozen people have gone through the training to become certified dealers. “The state of Illinois has a state distributor and the team will come here for a whole week of training. They will became certified on each product and system and they can go back and do their own certified classes.”
He said the Phoenix Group, one of the largest installation companies in the country, has received training on M2C’s products.
By the end of the month, Mobbs plans to hold a grand opening in Gulfport and then their dealers can start selling the products.
“We kept the state of Mississippi for ourselves,” he said. “The Gulfport store will be our support center and also our temporary corporate headquarters.” There also is a store in D’Iberville at Millennium Construction and a third store will be opening in Hattiesburg soon.
“Our goal is to be nationwide in six months,” he said.
