New hunting supplies sales tax holiday bill signed into law

Deer Antlers_4CACROSS MISSISSIPPI — Mississippi will remove its 7 percent state sales tax on guns, ammunition, archery equipment and some hunting supplies the first weekend of each September.

Gov. Phil Bryant yesterday signed Senate Bill 2425. It becomes law July 1.

The “Second Amendment Weekend,” without the tax, begins on the first Friday of each September and runs for three days, through Sunday. This year, it will be Sept. 5-7.

National Rifle Association executive director Chris Cox says the tax holiday “pays tribute to Mississippi’s hunting heritage” and the right to bear arms.

House Ways and Means Chairman Jeff Smith estimates the state will give up $375,000 in revenue each year by temporarily lifting the sales tax on those items.
