County continues to see rise in building permits

Homes_rgbDESOTO COUNTY — Homebuilding activity continues to rebound in DeSoto County.

The Commercial Appeal reports 334 single-family building permits have been issued through April, putting the county on track to exceed 2013’s total of 851.

County planning officials presented the numbers last week to the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors, saying they show an ongoing shift toward higher growth.

Single-family permits peaked at 2,802 in the county in 2005, as suburban development spread rapidly outward from Memphis, Tennessee, but plummeted to 454 in 2010 and 456 in 2011.

There were 133 residential permits issued in April, well above the 91 that were issued in April 2013. Most permits were issued in Southaven, unincorporated areas of the county and Olive Branch.
