AROUND MISSISSIPPI — The qualifying deadline is tomorrow for Mississippi’s the nonpartisan judicial races on the ballot for the Nov. 4 general election.
On the ballot will be races for three Mississippi Court of Appeals judgeships and county, chancery and circuit judges across the state.
The candidates run without party affiliation.
The three incumbent members of the Appeals Court — Jimmy Maxwell of Oxford, Kenny Griffis of Ridgeland and Virginia Carlton of Columbia — were unopposed as of yesterday, according to the secretary of state’s website.
The 10-member Court of Appeals hears cases assigned by the state Supreme Court. The Mississippi Legislature created the court in 1994 to speed appeals and relieve a backlog of cases before the State Supreme Court.
Court of Appeals judges serve eight-year staggered terms.
