Rail commission applies for grant to restore Coast passenger service

railroad_tracks418 (1)MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST — The Southern Rail Commission (SRC) has applied for a $1-million TIGER planning grant that would assess the feasibility of intermodal needs for restoring intercity passenger rail operations to a daily service along the Gulf Coast.

These funds would be used to examine transportation gaps, determine the most advantageous station locations, capital needs, potential funding sources and prepare a final report that will recommend the restoration of passenger rail service from of New Orleans to Orlando, Fla.

As a part of that effort, the SRC has engaged Transportation for America to provide strategic consulting services to help the Commission identify opportunities at the federal level that supports expanded passenger rail service in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

The SRC has also launched a new website – www.southernrailcommission.org. The website will feature updates on SRC initiatives and progress reports on rail projects.
