VICKSBURG — The state of Mississippi has returned the Vicksburg Auditorium back to the city of Vicksburg.
“The state of Mississippi has no need to maintain ownership of this property,” says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. “It is best kept in the hands of the local governing authority, which can decide the best use of the auditorium on the local level.”
“I would like to applaud the state legislature and the secretary of state for expediting the transfer of this property,” says Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs. “Because of this transfer, the City of Vicksburg will be able to make much-needed improvements to the auditorium without waiting on state approval.”
In 1985, the city of Vicksburg deeded the land to the state of Mississippi for $10, purportedly for economic development purposes. Senate Bill 2341, passed during the 2014 legislative session, authorized the transfer of the land back to the city of Vicksburg.
