GOP consultant: Tea party complaints 'racist and stupid'

tea partyJACKSON — National Republican leaders trying to appeal to non-white voters are cringing over Senate candidate Chris McDaniel’s complaints that Democrats — most of whom are black in Mississippi — voted in the state’s GOP Senate runoff and helped six-term incumbent Thad Cochran capture the party nomination.

“The more the tea party complains about how black voters vote for Republicans, I think they look racist and stupid,” said John Feehery, a GOP consultant in Washington. “We’re trying to get black voters. Now that one of our candidates got black voters, we should be happy about it.”

Nearly 377,000 people voted in Tuesday’s runoff in Mississippi, and Cochran received nearly 6,800 votes more than tea party-backed McDaniel.

“There is something a bit strange, there is something a bit unusual, about a Republican primary that’s decided by liberal Democrats,” McDaniel said to a roar from supporters on election night in Hattiesburg. Yesterday, he still refused to concede and vowed instead to investigate vote patterns for “irregularities.”

Turnout was up significantly from a three-person primary on June 3, when McDaniel had finished about 1,400 votes ahead of Cochran but nobody received a majority to win.

Importantly, turnout in Mississippi’s majority-black counties grew by 43 percent from June 3 to the runoff, while in majority-white counties, it grew 17 percent.

When reporters in Washington asked Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., if Cochran’s appeal to Democratic voters might have a negative impact on the GOP, Wicker responded with a laugh.

“Broadening the base of the party? Asking more Mississippians to participate in the ballot that’s going to determine the next senator? No, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that,” he said.

Cochran, a former Appropriations Committee chairman, made no secret of trying to draw support from any Mississippian legally allowed to vote. Mississippi does not register voters by party. Under state law, the only voters barred from participating in the Republican runoff were those who cast a ballot in the June 3 Democratic primary.

With an increase in turnout, Cochran won with nearly 52 percent of the vote.

It was an improbable achievement of a key but elusive goal for the GOP: find a way to survive in a nation where growing numbers of African-Americans and other minority voters overwhelmingly cast ballots for Democrats. Birth rates among whites are shrinking in the U.S., while racial and ethnic minorities are expected to make up a majority of Americans within about 30 years.

Exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and the networks showed that only about 6 percent of black voters identified themselves as GOP voters in 2004, and 4 percent did so in 2008 and 2012.

Republicans in Washington distanced themselves from a candidate’s complaint about drawing black voters for a white candidate in racially polarized Mississippi.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who recently defeated several tea party challengers in a Republican primary, told reporters: “If Thad did get a bump from African-American participation in the Republican primary, that’s probably the best news I’ve heard in a long time.”

About Megan Wright

  1. It appears there are a number of fraudulent votes that were cast. It may not be over.

  2. Dennis Hastert’s dhimmi press secretary can go eat a dck, as per usual. Every Tea Party member is voting Democrat in the election. You wanna play b|tch? We can play b|tch.

  3. The Establishment GOP needs it’s ass handed back to them on a platter this November in those states where do nothing rino Republicans are running. Are these consultants for real? The Numbskulls who crossed over to vote for the senile old coot are NOT going to turn Republican.Conservatives are not going to vote or support these phonies…

  4. Conservatives are not going to vote for these sickening,do-nothing rhinos in November. And the numbskulls who crossed over are not turning Republican the next election. How much do these “consultants” get paid again?

  5. What a lousy job of reporting the facts. The information that explains the McDaniel position is left out. The issue isn’t black voters it’s the fliers & robo-calls that overtly played to racial hot button issues & smeared McDaniel with lies.

  6. You lying disengenuous RINO. You aren’;t trying to get Blacks to vote for Republicans, you simply got got them to break the law and cross over in OUR PRIMARY so you could defeat a REAL REPUBLICAN your RINO Cochran who is destroying America as much as the Democrats.

You can take your crocodile tears and drown in them, you did robo calling screaming and LYING that McDaniel would “diss” OBAMA BECAUSE OBAMA’S BLACK, and cut off foodstamps, etc.

You are EXACTLY why the Tea Party was formed, you are unprincipled slime who would sell your own mother out if it got you more votes for your crony capitalist fake Republican candidate.

Why don’t you tell the good black REGISTERED DEMS you LIED to get them to turn out for the REPUBLICAN PRIMARY (who will now turn around and vote Dem in the coming election), why don’t you tell them how Cochran will vote WITH OBAMA and FOR HIS BIG BUSINESS CRONIES to give amnesty to and allow in millions more illegal aliens, and you tell them how their voting for Cochran is going to then depress black worker’s wages and SKYROCKET THEIR UNEMPLOYMENT.

When OBAMA cuts off their EBT, I hope those voters come to your town AND EAT YOU ALIVE.

  7. Is this guy really that fricking stupid?

  8. Good. Then Cochran can rely on all those AA he lied to, to vote for him. He doesn’t need his base at all, right?

  9. How fast people forget history;

Democrats owned more slaves than Republicans
Democrats fought to keep slavery, Republicans fought to stop it
Democrats created the KKK not Republicans
Democrats created welfare to keep Blacks as todays slavery to government freebees
It was a Republican that freed the slaves
99% of all blacks in America were Republicans until welfare came along & made them slaves again
Republicans have done more for promoting blacks in congressional jobs then Democrats
Democrats still do everything they can to keep blacks out of there private lives & country clubs
Democrat controlled Unions have destroyed nearly all manufacturing jobs.
Democrat controlled Teachers Unions have all but stopped teaching the truth in schools about America
& now that Mississippi Blacks have stood up & backed the first Congressman to hire a black on his staff back in 1977 & stood up for what is right, there is suddenly a problem with it.
If not for Mississippi Blacks voting to Keep our flag because they know the difference between hatred & Heritage Democratic outsiders would have gotten there way. remember blacks comprise a majority in Mississippi not whites.
Because Blacks voted as Republican & not Democrats should tell you that Mississippi Blacks know more about what is right than the raciest Democrats that come here & continue to stir up trouble makes it wrong.
Well just remember that the truth about America may not be told in school but it still lives in the hearts of Mississippians Black & White.

  10. I am from MS, white and I USED to be a Republican. I have been voting independent and Democrat for a while now but with a lot of other unhappy ex-republicans chose to speak my mind in the Jun 3 primary and a lot more of us again on the 24th that MS is tired of buying what the TeaPots are selling. You can just keep believing this was caused by robocalls and outsiders until you fall into complete insignificance if you choose and that is just fine with me! I am so thrilled that Senator Cochran choose to defy you racist and reach out across party lines to the PEOPLE of MS. If you had once stepped out of the echo chamber of your own voices you would have realized you were setting yourself up for a fall. Maybe if YOU stopped listening to out of state moneyed interest and started listening to what the people of MS are saying you might have realized your danger before the runoff but the fact that your backers wasted all that money on you is reward enough for me. A lot of Mississippians have discovered that the further right y’all go the only thing we get is “another day older and deeper in debt” and we are well and truly tired of the fact that under the tutelage of far right dogma for years MS is still sitting last place in anything that matters. Your economic and social theories are nothing but products of your own hate filled imaginations and we want better for our children. We have successfully separated you parasites from your Republican host now and they will either come back to the real world or go back and die with you. Next time you decided to create a political party you might try talking to ALL the people not just the ones cuddling up to you.
