McDaniel camp still examining poll books for irregularities

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — The campaign of tea party-backed Senate candidate Chris McDaniel says volunteers are trying to examine poll books in all 82 Mississippi counties as he decides whether to appeal Republican primary runoff results.

Six-term Sen. Thad Cochran topped McDaniel by nearly 6,800 votes last Tuesday. Cochran received 51 percent.

McDaniel campaign spokesman Noel Fritsch said people have encountered problems in about half of all counties after asking to examine poll books.

Bill Billingsley says he and other volunteers think they found about 1,200 instances of Hinds County residents marked as voting in the Democratic primary June 3 and Republican runoff Tuesday. Such crossover voting is not allowed.

Hinds County GOP chairman Pete Perry says there might have been clerical errors.

Cochran campaign strategist Austin Barbour says the election ended last Tuesday.
