The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is about to re-enter the Mississippi Senate race, laying down TV reservations for the last week of the runoff campaign between Republican Sen. Thad Cochran and his challenger, state Sen. Chris McDaniel, Politico reports.
Politico said two sources closely monitoring the state say that the Chamber will start a fresh round of advertising beginning Monday. One media tracker said the business group has booked $308,000 in airtime on broadcast stations across the state. The ads already cover markets in Biloxi, Jackson, Meridian, Hattiesburg, Greenwood and Columbus-Tupelo.

The Chamber’s renewed engagement in the race is a boon to Cochran, who benefited from the business lobby’s largesse of $500,000 ahead of the first round of primary voting on June 3. Though Cochran is perceived as an underdog in the runoff, facing down a well-funded conservative insurgent with apparent momentum, the Chamber ads are an indication that D.C. Republicans believe the race can be salvaged before the June 24 vote.
In an email to the Mississippi Business Journal late Friday afternoon, Chamber spokeswoman Blair Holmes declined to say how much new ad buying the organization would do, but said it would be big. “On Monday, we’re going up with a new ad urging voters to stand with Cochran on June 24th for good paying jobs and for Mississippi’s future,” she said. “We don’t ever discuss how much we’re spending but I can tell you that this is a sizable buy.
Several groups that have spent heavily on the race, including the pro-McDaniel Club for Growth and the Cochran-boosting National Association of Realtors, have already gone back on the air for the runoff fight. And after a brief lull following June 3, as the candidates replenished their cash reserves, the Cochran and McDaniel campaigns put up new ads of their own this week as well.
