Mississippi River bridge work will snarl traffic

river-bridgeAnyone with travel plans that include crossing the Mississippi River at Vicksburg should expect some delays.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development is performing a bridge retrofit project that will limit traffic to the inside lanes, eastbound and westbound, on Interstate 20 at the Mississippi River bridge near Vicksburg.

During the project, there will be a wide load restriction of 18 feet and may have brief restrictions of 16 and a half feet.

Advance warning signs will be in place on the days that the project requires the 16 and a half-foot restriction.

Crews will work 24 hours a day to expedite the project, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

Work on the project began today, and is expected to be completed Aug. 21.
