City officials back off post-shooting rental price hikes

SOUTHAVEN — The city of Southaven has scaled back the rental for city-owned facilities.

The city raised the rent after a shooting in July 2013 at the city’s Tennis Center.

Mayor Darren Musselwhite tells The Commercial Appeal that officials decided they overreacted. He says they didn’t want to make the facilities too expensive for people to use.

The Tennis Center rent is back from $1,000 to $750 — the rate before the shooting.

At The Snowden House — a popular site for wedding receptions — rent will drop from $1,750 to $1,250. That’s $150 less than it was before the shooting.

Rental of the auditorium at the city’s Performing Arts Center falls from $1,000 to $750, or $250 more than before the shooting.
