Silver Airways must continue to offer service to airports

Silver_AirwaysAROUND MISSISSIPPI — The U.S. Department of Transportation has directed Silver Airways to continue passenger service in four Mississippi cities and one in Alabama through Sept. 5.

Government officials say they need more time to review proposals for new subsidized air service in Tupelo, Greenville, Hattiesburg/Laurel, Meridian and Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The order extended for 30 days an earlier order that would have expired this week.

Silver Airways announced in April it was ending service to those cities.

Tupelo has recommended that Portland, Oregon-based SeaPort Airlines become the next carrier for the city. Greenville and Muscle Shoals, Alabama have recommended SeaPort as well.

Meridian and Laurel/Hattiesburg, meanwhile, will get new air service starting Nov. 1 with Express Jet.
