Ex-Canton alderman gets 66 months for accepting bribe

gavel_rgbCANTON — A former Canton alderman has been sentenced to 66 months in prison on a bribery conviction.

Fifty-eight-year-old Calvin Louis Smith was indicted in April and charged with one count of bribery involving federal programs. The indictment says he sought bribes valued at more than $5,000 from May to October in 2012 in connection with a series of transactions made on behalf of the City of Canton.

He was convicted in May in federal court in Jackson. He was sentenced yesterday.

Federal prosecutors say Smith also was given two years of supervised release and was fined $1,000.
