MDEQ fines metalworking firm over hazardous waste

mdeqSENATOBIA — A Senatobia metalworking firm is paying $24,640 civil fine for failing to conduct inspections and mishandling hazardous waste

Aluminum Extrusions agreed to pay the fine to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

An Aug. 4 order published by the department says that Aluminum Extrusions broke permit terms by not making inspections or keeping spill records in 2013, as well as emitting overly alkaline wastewater. The agency also listed seven violations relating to the handling of hazardous waste, including keeping open containers, failing to move 55-gallon drums to storage, failing to label drums, leaving hazardous waste in damaged containers and failing to inspect the area.

John King, president of the company, signed a form in July agreeing to waive hearing rights and pay the fine.
