First South Mississippi village post office opens

BIG LEVEL — South Mississippi’s first village post office has opened in the Stone County community of Big Level.

Mississippi’s first Village Post Office opened in May at the Knox Grocery in the Prairie community of Monroe County in north Mississippi. A second one also opened later in Dennis in Tishomingo County.

The Big Level Grocery is hosting the office, offering stamps, postal boxes, prepaid priority mail envelopes and a mail collection box.

The Postal Service sets up village post offices in places without a regular post office or places where post offices have reduced operating hours. The U.S. Postal Service wants to close some small post offices to save money.

There was no office in Big Level, and the grocery is open daily.

There are more than 700 village post offices nationwide.
