CARROLLTON — Fiddler William “Willie” T. Narmour and guitarist Shellie “Shell” W. Smith will be recognized with a marker on the Mississippi Country Music Trail.
The unveiling is scheduled for at 11 a.m. Saturday on Lexington Street in Carrollton.
Blending blues and old-time dance tunes, Narmour and Smith became an influential duo with 48 recordings for Okeh and Bluebird records from 1928 to 1934. They recorded “Carroll Country Blues” and “Avalon Quick Step.”
The two had played music together from childhood.
They made their first records for Okeh in Memphis in February 1928. Their recording career ended with a record of 16 songs for the Bluebird label in July 1934, all remakes of tunes they’d recorded earlier.
Narmour died in March 1961. Smith died in April 1968.
