BILOXI — Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann has presented a check for $9.5 million to the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources to fund projects to increase public access to waterways and marine conservation management.

Hosemann made the presentation yesterday to MDMR Executive Director Jamie Miller.

The Tidelands Trust Fund Program began in 1994. Mississippians own the public trust tidelands, the land covered by water at high tide. Rent is collected from tidelands leaseholders, including casinos. The money is supposed to go toward “conservation, reclamation, preservation, acquisition, education” and better access to the water.

Miller says the Tidelands trust fund provides the key to greater access to coastal tidelands and management of agency programs.
