Noted Mississippi painter Bucci dies at 92

Paint_can_with_brushRIDGELAND — Modernist painter Andrew Bucci, a celebrated Mississippi visual artist whose work spanned nearly eight decades, died Sunday at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, after a brief illness. He was 92.

A memorial service will be announced at a future date. His death was announced in a statement released today by the family.

In recent years, Bucci was honored with Mississippi’s prestigious arts awards. In 2009, he received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts from the Mississippi Arts Commission for lifetime achievement. In 2012 he received the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Lifetime Achievement Award.

His painting, “Figure in Green,” was the signature image on the commemorative poster for the 2014 USA International Ballet Competition.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews
