Hattiesburg mayor to bring forward city clerk nominee

HATTIESBURG — Consideration of a city clerk candidate will be among the items of business during the city of Hattiesburg’s first extended council meeting in 28 days.

The Hattiesburg American reports Mayor Johnny DuPree has nominated city Purchasing Manager Verlina Underwood for council approval Tuesday as director of administration/city clerk.

The city has not had a full-time clerk since Eddie Myers resigned in September 2013.

Underwood is in her second stint as a city administrator. Starting in August 2004, she served a 29-month stretch as the city’s purchasing manager, retiring in January 2007.

She was rehired in March 2007 on a part-time basis as purchasing assistant, and remained at that status for a year before being elevated back to purchasing manager in March 2008.
