Hattiesburg council approves 2 of mayor's nominees

HATTIESBURG — The Hattiesburg City Council has confirmed two of Mayor Johnny DuPree’s nominees to fill administrative positions of leadership.

The Hattiesburg American reports Council unanimously approved Tuesday holdover Municipal Court Judge Pro-tem Carol Jones Russell and first-time Public Defender candidate Shakita Taylor.

But City Attorney nominee Ramel Cotton was rejected by a 3-2 vote.

Council also rejected Jimmie Gardner’s nomination as police chief.

The rejections leave the city with three directors unconfirmed, including attorney, police chief and city clerk.

The council has twice turned down DuPree’s nominees for each of those positions.

Two council members had filed suit in November, asking the court to require that DuPree bring forward posthaste candidates for the remaining city directors requiring council approval.
