JACKSON — Republican Rep. Steven Palazzo of Mississippi is joining the U.S. House Appropriations Committee.
Palazzo was named on Tuesday to the committee, which helps decide how to spend billions of federal dollars on everything from defense contracts to health care.
A Mississippi congressman who died in early February, Republican Alan Nunnelee, had served on Appropriations.
Palazzo says nobody can replace Nunnelee, but he will try to do his best in the new assignment.
Palazzo, of Biloxi, and Nunnelee, of Tupelo, were both elected to the House in 2010.
